Looking at the bark.....I bet thats a chinese elm (Ulmus parifolia). I had one just like it; same pot and everything. Just a guess though.
Another good thing about akadama is that it allows oxygen to circulate amongst the roots, but if the medium is always waterlogged then it won't do this as efficiently.
When you water, the downward motion of the water trickling through the potting medium sucks fresh air into it and amongst the roots.
This is why its a good idea to wait, and water when the medium is dry on the surface, as Joanie said.
Good to see you got the wire off. Sounds like it was in a bad condition when you bought it, but I'm sure it will be fine, just don't fuss about with it.
