Hi jonesmc77,

Your tree is an azalea of some kind. Definitely suitable for bonsai, and the tree you have has a large trunk and should back bud freely. This specimen has the potential to become a fine tree.

Somebody else will be able to tell you about pulling them out of the ground. It is a common practice but i haven't done so.
