I too am looking to try growing a japanese red maple from a cutting. It seems as though either no one tries doing it, or it has such a high failure rate that no one likes to talk about it judging by the lack of responses.
I spoke to a Bonsai expert at a nearby nursery on Thursday and he said the success rate of growth from a cutting is pretty slim. Out of 50 cuttings, he estimated only 20 - 30 would grow. In translation, thats a 50-50 chance that one will root and take.
The only option I have to try and grow one at the moment is to take a cutting from my girlfriends mothers bush and attempt to root it using hormone routing powder. Should hopefully be getting a cutting tonight when I go to pick her up. Will keep you posted on my sucess/failure.
