couldnt have said that better myself.
as the final design stages are reached the guides i use are some of the above +
except cascade height of pot ( not counting feet) = width of trunk.
taller designs; 2/3 height of tree = width of pot
shorter, wider designs; 2/3 width of tree = width of pot (sometimes these can also look better if the depth of the pot is shallower than the width of the trunk. multi trunks and clumps for example.)
some trees just need to hold more soil ( for vitallity. your zones and micro climates may determine this also )full stop and there a compramise needs to be reached.
forests always look better in a shallow pot width to compliment the space designed.
