It also depends on the stage of development of the tree. Trees that are still developing trunks and branches should not be put in smaller pots as this will significantly slow growth down. Trees should be placed in their final "bonsai" pot only when they have already achieved the desired size/shape of the trunk and branches and minimal growth is needed to complete your design plans.
