The Japanese maple that is pictured at the top of the thread is in bonsai soil that I bought from a nursery. I couldn't say what the make-up of the soil is. I'm not that knowledgeable about soil yet. It does need to be repotted though. There's wire on that large root that's visible that needs to be removed. I could try repotting it and putting it into new bonsai soil. That might stress the tree more though...

I guess a good starting point might be to spend some time learning about soil and trying to figure out what kind of soil it is in.

The other tree, the trident maple, is in potting soil. Infact it's still in the same deep growing pot that it was in when I got it from the nursery.
