Chinese elm need a dormancy period. I usually leave mine outside at least part of the year during the winter months. Usually one to two months, but otherwise I keep them indoors.
Try ficus (any variety), surinam cherry, serissa, brazilian rain tree, fukien tea, bougainvillea, texas ebony.
While I grow these species successfuly inside during the winter. I still put them outside during warner months.
