John, the reason I twist mine was that after a very hard pruning on Pinezilla's branches I started getting new buds at the bases of the older needles. If I were to have just pulled them(the older needles) off they would've taken the new buds that were forming. Even the twisting of one at a time motion took a few new buds in the process. As far as adventatious buds popping out closer to the trunk not many popped on PZ. But I know I am still a long ways away on this particular pine. Sorry that I did not explain this earlier. And I'll put a disclaimer with this....Do Not Attempt This on Your Own Tree. Remember I'm a noob
