I can't really stop it where I am, but I try to introduce different types (finer and with varied colour and texture). This is a natural way of controlling the more dominant and vigorous kind that usually grows rampant around here.
I use an old toothbrush to keep it off the trunks and nebari and pull plugs out now and again to let air and water through. Other than that, I do nothing and it looks quite nice.
