Chinese elms grow very easily from root cuttings. If you have severed any roots that are on the surface of the soil and get at least some sun, they might grow. I have one that is doing that at the moment as i had cut off a single root (only 1 mm in diameter) and did not pull it out of the soil as it wasn't time to repot, and didn't come out easily with a light pull. Hes got a few leaves on him now.

Photos are always beneficial if you want identification.
