We use both terms in our beginners class, and use them with out calling a lot of attention to them. We seem to use Japanese terms for the 5 styles and Jin, shari , and the nebari the most, which are all descriptive bonsai jargon.
I'm reminded of the time Warren Hill came to our club a long time ago. He was critiquing trees and came upon a two trunked Group. He asked if it was a soju or sokan?
No one new, and he gave us a tongue lashing for not being up on our terms. So a decade or so later he was coming back. I thought Ill bone up on my Japenese terms. I got out some old International Magazines that had words like ishitsuki, etc. I was ready when he came .I would show all my superior knowledge of bonsai descriptive words.
Not one stinkin' Japanese term. Seems in the decade he had stopped using them so much, and had a much easier going approach towards it all.
So I guess someday we will not use those words at all, o well.
BTW, sokan two trunks connected by root or trunk --
soju two separate trees snugged up together...
Hope I remembered that right...chuckle
