Trip To The Mountains, Part 2
See my first post for an explanation of what these photos are about.
This shows my son with a Yellow Birch we found. It was growing on a large granite bolder. There was a patch of moss about 2 ft. long and 1 ft. wide just sitting on the sloped top of this bolder. The tree was growing in the moss and debris that had accumulated there. You could just lift the tree right up and everything came with it, except for three long roots that went over to another patch of material with some other plants growing in it. Kind of amazing that the tree had managed to live on that rock and grow.
It has a trunk that is about 1 1/2" around at the base. My son is holding onto some shoots that came up right at the surface out of the trunk. The longest limb is about 3 1/2 ft. long. Quite an interesting thing to see.
The other photo, my son again, standing beside a downed Red Spruce log with a small Red Spruce having grown into the rotting wood of the dead tree. Again, quite an interesting thing to see.
I'll post some more general photos of what we saw in Part 3.
