I've frequently used foliar feeding on both newly-repotted trees and new cuttings, with good results. In one or two cases it has made the difference between survival and firewood!
I may have mentioned this before in this forum, but Kathy Shaner recommends beer as a foliar, 1 Tbs to a gallon of water. That's right, beer. I've tried it, again with good results.
What makes it work is that some of the products in the beer are broken down enough that the plant can use them directly. Kathy also recommends giving them the last beer left in the bottle the next morning. They don't care! (No need to give them the Guiness.)
