I have used modeling clay for about 15 years now and I love it.
It never hardens and allows the wound to continue to seal itself pushing the clay off when it is totaly healed.
I like the way it looks as well because I match the color to the bark of the tree.
I have even textured it with a piece of bark giving it the same look as the bark around the wound, it's almost invisible that way.
