The quick answer is.... it depends...

Where the trees in the ground on a full time basis? is so, they are not Bonsai. Bonsai must be in a pot.

Where the trees in the ground for the winter season? and then they come out with their pot? Yes this would be a bonsai forest.

Are the trees in the ground so as to have them grow, trees grow much quicker in the ground. In this case they are not now bonsai but are being trained as bonsai.

This is obviously a quick and not complete answer. You will be much better served by reading and learning!!
