Strange behaviour of ficus cutting

A few weeks ago I took a fairly large cutting from one of my ficuses (I believe it's Natalensis) and put it in a cup of water. It quickly grew a thick cluster of roots and is probably ready for potting, though I plan to wait a while still. A couple of days ago I noticed two tiny leaves forming among the roots, about two inches below the water level.

I have never seen this before and was wondering if it is normal. Also, what must I do about those leaves when I move it into a pot? I really don't want to start cutting them in case I damage the young roots.
