Hello Leesa, They use trays about the size of a dish drainer cut down to about 1/2 to 2 inches tall. Yes there are holes in them for drainage. They also just water once a day except in hot part of summer, then water twice a day morning and evening. Keeping the [tray] medium moist helps keep the roots from getting hot and the soil does not dryout so fast. This is what they have used for a while, and it sounds like it would work well. I am going to try it out myself soon. Hope this helps.

Jeff
