I would really like to see a follow up on the lodgepole pines. After collecing many california junipers with a success rate of over 90%, I collected a few lodgepole pines (with permit of course) and had 100% failure. Used similar technique: plant in pure pumice, mist several times a day, ensure morning sun, etc.
The lodgepoles were collected in Oct, looked fine all winter, then failed to push new growth in the spring. All were dead by May. I suspect the long dormant period between collection and spring growth may have helped seal their fate. Also, the lodgepoles had less fine roots than the Junipers I normally collect so succesfully.
