In that case you may want to stay away from a glazed oval pot altogether. I have seen some marvelous plantings in long, flat pots, with a tree placed to the side which were very similar to what you are describing.
I think John Naka may actually have an illustration in BT I or II.
I think that putting it in a glazed oval just invites people to think it is "following the rules of bonsai."
