Hi Bonsai Barry,

I have a few in the garden (non bonsai) and they can take whatever pruning you give to them. Its hard to tel lfrom your pictures but it seems like yours may be varigaeted. I've only ever seen the solid coloured ones flower. The ones in my garden have recently droped a few branches. After a quick disection, i found a borer or grub of some kind inside the branches that had hollowed them out.I dont know if this insect is a problem in the USA.

Their sap is extreamly anoying! I hate the way it sticks to your hands and refuses to let go with normal soap and water. Good luck!
