Hi Bonhe, your Bougie has great potential. Great carving material too. Here's a picture of a nicely carved and hollowed out elm bonsai from Vietnam. I am sorry I don't know by whom, but if I ever meet the creator of this tree I will buy him a drink! I think you can carve your tree almost all the way through like that, and kinda spiral it up the trunk like that too. Here's a quick sketch of how I see your tree. Basically, I would just keep all branches long and pull them down with strings. Don't chop any branches off, especially the low ones. I get a feeling of a wild and natural look for your tree. I would not go for a layered topiary look for this tree, because it will not fit with such a rough and ancient trunk. In Southern California, most bougie bonsais tend to look like topiaries, you know, pom-poms.
