I wonder how the second tree will back bud on old wood.... you need to chase back the growth... But not knowing how the tree will respond to hard pruning, you may want to be conservative in your approach this year. Some trees need to be chased back slowly, while others can handle radical work. Maybe you can take photos of the foliage on the second tree and get someone to ID it for you.
