Yep, zelkova. I have several of these and the leaves are spot on - more pointy than chinese elm. Looks like some one tried to get it moving toward a broom style. I have seen many pics of Japanese gray bark elm (same as zelkova serrata) in that style. They make good candidates because of the fine branching and the leaves that reduce quite well.

Can't quite tell the spacing of the limbs - are they all to the back in the second pic with a sizable scar on the front? The scar should heal nicely in time, but you might need to correct the limbs so that they are spaced well around the trunk.
