old wives tale
Just my 2 cents,
While new to bonsai, I have been a certified arborist for 11 years and while I dont have time right now to find and post links I have done my reasearch. My findings from my own personal experience and others scientific reaserch is that It is critical that you fertilize especially after digging up or repotting and rootpruining even though there may not be many feeder roots left. True the plant will have a harder time using for a while untill new roots are replaced and that is where foliar feeding comes in. I have seen enough of these trees suffer from nutrient defeciencies by not foliar feeding or in pot fert.
For foliar I use full strength seaweed extract and half strenth MG Tomato.
For in pot I use Superthrive, Fish emulsion and seaweed extract full strength!
What you are smelling in B1 transplant products are NAA/IBA Auxins, most B1 products contain these and this is what works, B1 has never been proven to do anything although for some reason the label sells more bottles.
Superthrive has these auxins but from my results seems to work better than any other product I have ever used, time and time again I find myself swearing by Superthrive. The label threw me off for a while and my landcaper buddies allways jest me for using it but for me the proof is in the pudding.
It is almost more importaint to fertilize in this critical time simply because the plant is severely limited after rootpruining to absorb all of the water and nutrients it needs.
