When you say the leaves were covered with dust, do you really mean dust, or was it already some kind of mildew? I'm thinking what happened to the tree was maybe already going on when you bought it. As far as cutting off a trunk, I don't think it's ever a good idea to do any kind of training to a tree that isn't it good health. With all the leaves gone, the sap / carbohydrates in that second trunk may be needed to keep it alive thru the winter. Good luck.
