The wetting agents (not that gel stuff that absorbs the water) use surfactants (mild detergants) to help water penetrate the surface of soils. These products are designed for the small grains of garden soil but can be used for bonsai. I use a product that is basically small porous rocks that have been soaked in wetting agent then dried. The brand i use also has seaweed extract which my bonsai like. I sift the rocks and add it to my soil mix.
