Chinese Elm Ground Layer

BEND ME TWIST ME

THE JOURNEY OF 200 DESERT ASH
12/09/07
Chinese Elm Ground Layer

2 years ago I purchased this little elm with the ugly burl on its trunk to grow out and eventually hollow out the burl. Change of plans now kept it shohin size.

I particularly liked what was going on above the burl and if I can achieve a ground layer with enough angle, across the middle of the burl, to slant the tree and get immediate basal flare, I will have a couple of nice options in the not too distant future. I think cascade will be the order.

So out came the dremel with a fine bit and I channelled around the burl. I worked the roots as I have the previous trees and buried it up over the burl using sandy mixture around the burl.
