WOW so many questions, but exciting thoughts. Trees in nature do inspire us,
as they should. My wife keeps reminding me to keep my eyes on the road while driving because the trees I see really grab my imagination. This is probably a desire to replicate trees we see in natural surroundings in the bonsai form. The idea of defoliating deciduous trees, is in the main, to stimulate the tree to produce smaller leaves tricking it into thinking spring has arrived once more.
The styling rules, in fact all the rules, were introduced by the Japanese in order to keep conformity to the subject. The Japanese live a very ordered life and that is their way, which I respect enormously. But in recent years people are embracing naturalistic and the older Chinese penjing styles. If that, (to quote Al Keppler) is what blows your skirt up then go for it.
The idea of moss growing on a trees' trunk in nature is quite a common occurrence but unfortunately in a small pot can be catastrophic as it can cause rotting in that area.
I do like your thoughts written here and look forward to read other members views.
