Well you said that you know there was fungus and it probably roted some bark and then some ants wich are harmless but suggest that there were problems on the tree (fungus) . I think the fungus probably rotted the bark and some of the trunk underneath. Im just wondering if When the heat started the fungus dried if it did Im almost sure my asumptions are correct.

Well thats my crack at it hope you get new bark.
