I am one of the few that maintain that (at least for me) a Serissa is bullet proof as long as you do not let it go dry. That said I / you will get at least 10 -20 that will tell you that they can't keep them alive. I think that they are over babied,underrated. You can typically get them fairly cheap, if you do when it come time to pot it, just keep the soil a bit rich on organics and I think you can do well . They are more of a clip and grow plant for bonsai, as they damage easily from wiring. If you goof a bit for a couple of days you may loose the leaves but they usually push out a new flush of foliage fairly quickly, so don't be afraid of them.

When you prune use most of the trimmings for cuttings, and before you know it you will be giving away Serrissa's to your friends. Don't shy away from the elms and ficus they are fairly easy to work with, and are forgiving to an extent as well, and lots of people use them so there is plenty of experiance around for help.
