Dan, the type of forsythia I have (afraid I don't know the exact variety) seems to flower only on the previous year's growth. As for pruning, I mostly just pinch back new growth to one or two pairs of leaves as it comes out in the spring and early summer. Anything larger I leave on over the winter to protect against die-back and remove in early spring before it starts to put out leaves or flowers. Good luck if you decide to dig yours up.
