Mike I can't see the photo's( firewall at work won't let me go to photobucket) but from your description you may have problems with this for bonsai. Hinoki's are well known for not budding back once the inner foliage dies off, so save any foliage close to the trunk and branches-if any- so you can grow out some help for design, or shoot for a big tree.
