Andy, technically yes, you're right. There are some species that are naturally adapted to growing in the broom fashion but any non-ornamental specimen won't grow like this on its own. I think my idea of a natural looking tree is a bit thwarted by where I live too. Our trees here grow tall and skinny with foliage spread out along the length of the tree. I simply have never seen a broom style tree in the wild.
I have attached two images of the tree and I think you'll agree with me that the styling looks fake.
