Cankers on Maples
Somebody tell me what this is and how to stop it!! The infected tree is not a bonsai but I have various maple bonsai training trees in the vecinity and would not like the infection to spread to them. As seen on the pix, a long canker-like area is attacking the branches of this red maple (Blood red). The canker spreads upwards towards the tip of the branch and kills it by drying it. The canker splits the bark and dries it from within. Also, the lower trunk is showing signs of dryness and chipping. What is this? How can I treat it? It spread to one of my other maples (green maple) and I had to remove the branch completely.
