Mike, the tree isn't flat at all, actually, but nicely layered, though the pics don't show it well. The cascading branch, from base to tip, drops over 16" in height. The branches coming off the cascade near the trunk are over 12" higher then the branches near the tip. My side shot was taken from too high an angle to highlight this. The crown is beginning to develop some descent branching...I'm planning on wiring it out later this summer.
Marie, I'm sorry but I don't have any pics of the branches in the process of being trimmed and wired. Some old issues of Bonsai today, as well as more rescent ones, Have good articles on the initial steps in forming branches, along with great pictures.
