Thanks for the post Vance. This is my first Hinoki. I've heard about the problems with its maintenence...constant pinching to maintain tight foliage, not pinching after mid summer so as not to weaken the tree, etc. I'm trying to come up with a way to maintain the shape of the tree, as well as its health. Luckily, the tree seems to have a fair amount of actively growing foliage near to the trunk. I'm only going to aggressively pinch back if the tree really starts to lose its shape...it has been sulking after some serious foliage reduction this spring but seems to be coming around over the last few weeks.
