I like where this tree seems to be going. I agree about the rest period but; and I am assuming this is a Hinoki Cypress from the pictures, it is important that you continually pinch the extending growth at the ends of the branches. This tree does not back bud well, if at all, and if not pinched will escape any attempts at design rather quickly and irrevocably. Hinokis take constant attention. This is one of the reasons you do not see too many of these trees coming out of Japan, they take too much work to maintain.
