All of my specimens stayed outside this past winter with no protection and got natural watering/snow. I just moved to a new house and didn't have the means for protection. I only lost a couple, everyone else soldiered through. This fall I will build a cold frame to protect them all. Last year they were in my fathers garage and were watered periodically and came out fine.
