For me it is all about art. After studying art and architecture I developed a keen interest in photography as well as in bonsai and believe that the standards of the 'aesthetic' are what led me there.

The most obvious parallel with the 'rules' of sound composition in painting for example is that the focal point should never be in the centre of the work. There are many more such as the leading of the eye into the picture and the play of light against dark (what the masters called 'chiaroscuro'), balance, etc.
The bottom line is that (whether or not you are aware of why), the fundamentals to proportion, tone and composition in visual art apply universally.
