Something I was told by a commercial nursery supplier along time ago was to use WHITE shadecloth and only that over plants for maximum effect.

Shade cloth is designed to provide shade and also filter light. As most plants, i.e, bonsai, like direct sunlight and as sunlight is white light, then white shade cloth is designed to filter all other colours other than white.

An example of this is two wholesale fern nurseries that I know of here in Victoria.
They use nothing but green shadecloth which gives the ferns green light as they would in the forest under the canopy of trees.
