Wound sealant threads are much like soil recipe threads: passions are stoked!
This is one place I would tend to disagree with Mark, with a caveat: If you are leaving a stub to dry out, to be carved later, I would not use the paste. After carving, if the wound is going to be left as a feature, I would not use cut paste. Most other times for larger wounds, I would. Many times on a larger wound such as on a pine, I will use the sealant around the edge. When the cut edges start to cicatrize, it will pop off.
I would never use the sticky stuff to seal a wound, after hard, bitter experience trying to get it off. It is grafting sealer.
