Thanks for your replies everyone, and your encouraging opinions. Consensus is that the top should go and go it will!
I've decided not to air-layer the top as there are a couple of nasty inverse tapers higher up the trunk and because I really am keen to see this tree transformed.
Oooh I can't wait!
