The only thing I would look out for is rust damage. If these are nursery pots, then you should be ok. This will probably be like growing in a colander/pond basket and you can get AMAZING growth that way. Go for it and tell us how it turns out.

I have made some wooden frame boxes with metal screening as the sides, they work out fine. Too soon to know if I get explosive growth tho!
