I know, and in fact I basically agree with what you said. The only problem I have is that whenever I try to save for something, some unforseen disaster comes along and I have to "repurpose" the money.
One area where I might quibble a little: Although time is also an investment, I've generally never felt that "time is money" is applicable in all situations. The time I spend on my trees doesn't reduce the amount of money I have to spend on feeding my family, since I don't tend my trees while I'm at work making money to feed my family and I'm not (right now, at any rate) planning on selling any of my trees to make money.
