I tried this "experiment" a little while ago, but the stock was not healthy at the time (which I knew but stupidly went ahead anyway). So, while I haven't had success with this technique on that size, I've spent a LOT of time thinking about it.

I don't think any of those big branches will end up in the final design. I was planning to forcing back budding until I got new shoots EXACTLY where I wanted them. Having lot of green on the tree at this point will help them contunue to fuze though, no?

Does the trunk still look like small trunks stuck together or more like on big trunk? Once the trunks are very firmly stuck together then prune back at the old branches to give your self some more little branches to pick from.

As for the branches fuzing, they should but it will take a long time and you won't be able to do any styling on them.
