I have always like this form of tree very much. This ficus is well on it's way to becoming a really beautiful bonsai.
That said, you might consider growing the canopy outward more, so that it more closely resembles the tree in the first photo, this will bring the canopy into a more harmonious balance with the trunk girth.
Excelent work so far, and please keep us posted on this trees progress.
