Tree detectives, check out the clue to death

This maple died over the winter. It was kept outside. We had about twelve days below freezing, with about five of those into the teens. Otherwise the temps have been in the upper 30's and low 40's at night.

I suspect I'm guilty of a water infraction, but the roots were never fully dried out and never fully saturated.

The only clue is that the bark seem to loosen on the tree and crack.

Any ideas the cause of death?

PS Sorry, Brian.
