The leaves don't decrease in sixe much after defoliation. By Fall they are about the same size as when I defoliate.
My main reason for defoliating is to renew the leaves and get more twigs. By Summer, the leaves that come out in Spring are dark green and very thick and some are torn etc. Defoliation renews them and Iget 2seasons growth and better Fall color.
