The shade cloth I have been using is 70% and with vertually no wind getting in. I have been told that this has caused my leaves to be tender and then they have surcum to heat damage. Possibly some drying as well. I am very unsure but the fact is Ray Nesci Bonsai nursery grows them in full sun at the nursery. I have always thought that he has cooler climate there being 5 hours away in the hills. Ray has assured me that this is not the case. Or specificly not my problem.
I am going to try more unprotected dappled shade next year and also try some soil mixes that allow me to constantly water.
I am in Parkes NSW I think 43 Deg celcious days were fairly common in the middle of summer.
I love the hornbeam, This is the first one I got(bit of a twig but I like it) a Korean hornbeam. It had the most amazing autum colour when I got it of Ray but I have not had healthy leaves in autum to repeat yet.
First pic as I got it
second the amazing autum colour and pattern up close, there can be three different colours on the one leaf like this
Third good times at Christmas
Fourth no autum colours again this year
