Wound sealant
I've had to read this thread hurriedly, so I don't know if anyone has mentioned that sealant may not only help stimulate wound closure and keep the wood around the cut from drying out, but it may also serve as a deterrent to harmful insects that will be attracted by the sap.
I think the key to success here is use of sealant on fresh wounds. I'm ceratin that an old wound that has dried has already suffered fungal and insect atttacks, and to put sealnat on such a wound only seals in the bad stuff.
